As engines roared at the nearby formula one circuit, a protest turned violent in Bahrain. ;Armed with tear gas and batons, riot police battled with the group of nearly 200 in Manama, where Formula One billboards were set on fire and twenty people were hospitalised. A Shiite opposition group issued a statement explaining that the protest had been staged because of the likely publicity surrounding the F1 race. Sat 11 Mar, 8:09 AM The first race weekend of the Formula One season was greeted with a riot in Bahrain. More than a hundred protesters clashed with police last night as they attempted to take advantage of Formula One's presence to highlight the imprisonment of a Muslim cleric. Tear gas was fired into the crowd on the outskirts of the Bahraini capital Manama by riot police and soldiers. A handful of injuries were reported.
